About Occupational Therapy Services

Pediatric occupational therapy is provided to help children achieve their maximum potential within their home, educational, and community environment. Occupational therapy enables children to have their highest function with their main occupations – play, development, education, and self-care skills.

  • Play involves strength to move the body, coordination to use both sides of the body effectively, and fine motor skill to pick up and manipulate toys meaningfully.
  • Development involves strength to move, explore, balance, crawl, walk, run, eat, engage in meaningful interactions with parents, siblings, peers, and authority figures.
  • Education involves manipulating crayons, pencils, books, scissors, glue, etc. with precision and control. It also involves the ability to remain engaged via attention and focus with teacher led lessons and individual work.
  • Self-care skills involve self feeding (spoon and cup), dressing, hygiene management, and manipulating packaging and containers for snacks, brushing teeth, and tying shoes.

Does My Child Need Occupational Therapy?

The following is a list of RED flags that often indicate that a child would benefit from occupational therapy:

  • Difficulty acquiring age appropriate motor skills
  • Poor transitioning from one task to another
  • Difficulty using both hands together in a coordinated manner
  • Decreased tolerance for varying foods/food textures
  • Sensitivity to various textures (clothing, grass, food)
  • Decreased tolerance for getting hands/face/feet messy
  • Decreased awareness of where body is in space (bumps children without noticing)
  • Constant need for movement that interferes with participation in school/home tasks
  • Frequent falling or bumping into things
  • Lack of interaction in group activities (birthday parties, play dates, playground play)
